Thursday Thoughts #1

This is my first post for Thursday Thoughts but it is about something that I am deeply concerned about that has been in my thoughts for over a week now so I thought it would help to post about it.

One evening I decided to relax & watch tv awhile so I turned the Animal Planet on to watch a show about dolphins...such intelligent creatures that are usually extremely gentle. However, they can become really stressed as my story will show...

On a sunny day, a family decided to take their boat out & enjoy a special time together. While they were out, a dolphin swam up to their boat so they fed it fish and the woman then decided she would like to swim with the dolphin so she got into the water and was enjoying petting & playing with the dolphin.

There were two more boats in the same area & the dolphin would swim from boat to boat for food but each time he went to the 3rd boat the guys on the boat would hit it on the head repeatedly & laugh really hard! Eventually the dolphin became extremely stressed and so he attacked the woman in the ocean. She survived the attack but suffered both physically & emotionally from the ordeal.

Now for my thoughts...needless to say, I was very, very outraged by the behaviour of the 2 grown men and found no humor in their actions at all!! Furthermore, I cannot believe that they were allowed to get away with such a horrendous, cruel action without being fined or put in jail. I also think that, at the very least, they should be held accountable for any medical treatment/surgery that the woman had to go through. Perhaps that would make them think twice before abusing another creature.

It was totally uncalled for & senseless...Why do people feel the need to be cruel to helpless creatures anyway!!? Can you tell that I am still really angered about this?

If you would like to join Thursday Thoughts, you will find the link listed in my sidebar.

I've been thinking about this since I read your entry! It has really haunted me. First why such cruelty? Is this supposed to me a 'macho' thing and show superiority to human's strength(tho not much here in my estimation) over an animals? Was it just that the guys could do this? *shaking my head* it's an event I'm glad I didn't witness.

Oh true, I feel the woman's pain...but your thought here, I'm gathering, is about the animal cruelty you witnessed on the program!!

Their hand should be branded!! They should be locked up for life...they should have 15 hours (24-7-365) each day of hard manual labor beaches, cleaning, building, and cleaning more, then before they're bread and water meal at the end of the day, a couple of whacks on their bodies!!

Sound like inhumane treatment to the guilty men? Maybe, but a great reminder for their long jail term is what they need!! There is just NO excuse for this behavior in my mind. Helpless animals deserve a break from these kinds.

My Thursday Thought is posted now.

people are so mean. They were probably drunk - no excuse. However, I question the woman who chose to swim with a wild animal like that, too. She's not entirely fault-less, but those guys are dumbarses!

Oh, dear! It does seem like I was focusing more on the cruelty to the dolphin but only because that is one of my "causes" that I strongly an opposed to but I certainly hate that the innocent woman had to suffer because of the actions of these 2 infantile "men"...I use that term lightly in this case!

Thanks for stopping by, Ms W...my first reaction was to throw them into a shark infested area...so sorry! Your thoughts are much more humane. LOL

LOL about throwing them to the sharks.

I see your point also Chi. But, in my mind the woman most likely shouldn't have been in the water with them...the dolphins are wild creatures, and tho docile most time, when threatened they will attack. No one forced her in the water, she was 'fair game' in nature's wrath. Tho, still sad.

No...personally I don't think either thought is right or wrong...they're both valid thoughts.

Ugh! This just makes me sick. I just don't understand why people are so mean to animals like that! Animals, like children, are just so defenseless.

I don't think these same guys would laugh if they saw a young child running between different groups of adults and one group continuously hit it on the head. Maybe somebody should hit them on the head!

I totally agree! Those men should be held accountable for their actions. How are we going to stop stupidity if we don't do anything about it...If they are finding this behavior funny are they bullying people too?

Now I see why you got so angry...

Take care,
Connie

There is no excuse what so ever for those men's behaviour. Absolutely none. Even though I think that people that act violent have damaged brains somehow. They're not well. It's no excuse though and I think that we have to mark that out more clearly than we do.

I came here to thank you for the lovely gift from Carmen's party.

Wow! Your story sure got my feathers in a ruffle! And I agree that these men should be thrown in with sharks...or perhaps with the poor dolphin they attacked.

The shame here is that poor dolphin now has a tainted view of humans. First that humans=food. They shouldn't have been feeding it. I've heard stories where dolphins have jumped into boats looking for food from humans. Sad. And second that humans=pain. Humans can act so stupid.

When I lived in FL we went to catch the ferry to an island beach (gulf side) and a school of dolphins came by fishing. They had an audience of us waiting for the ferry and soon forgot their fish in favor of the applause. They were quite the little hams. It was an awesome day...even though I got sunburnt at the beach. Dolphins in the wild are a thing of beauty.

Well now... I have to wonder... you said you saw this on television - and not in "real life"... so that makes me wonder WHY didn't the people TAPING the show DO something about it? Was this part of a "staged" event - so that they would be able to SHOW what happens when dolphins become stressed? Is that what the show was ABOUT? I'm just wondering... I don't condone cruelty to animals under ANY circumstances ... but I MORE have to wonder why OTHER PEOPLE would stand around and video tape it and not do anything about it!???
