Just Expressing Thoughts

It was a sleepless night for me so I watched tv & found this show on the National Geographic channel called Pet MDs that was very interesting to me. One of the cases on this episode was a little 12 year old dog that was blind due to cataracts so I paid great attention to what they said because my chi, Sheba, is also 12 & has the same problem.

My vet said that she could not do cataract surgery on Sheba but this hospital was much larger & surgery was an option for this little dog. However, the vet on the show discovered that the cataracts had completely destroyed the retinas & so removing the cataracts would not help him to see again. He also said that this is what happens in quite a number of cases.

When Sheba was first diagnosed, I really thought about finding a vet that had the means to do cataract surgery but I also considered her age and I finally decided it would just be best for Sheba to let her lead as normal a life as possible for as long as she can.

Sheba has turned into a couch potato but when she needs to be taken outdoors or needs to eat/drink, she will bark to let me know she needs help getting off the couch. It is a system that works well for the both of us. *s*

Awww. Poor Sheba. Or wait, maybe she's got the right idea. Of course, I could bark all I want to get off the couch, but no one would come help me. :)

Good mornin' Chi!

Personally, tho we love our pets like family, at Sheba's age, I'm sure spending tons of money to get her eyes to focus once again and her sight partially restored, would maybe do more harm than good. Ya know? She may not come back with the drugs during the operation. I think you made the right choice.

Our dog "Spot" is 12 years old too. She's really perked up now that we have the cats. She's a poddle/terrier cross. She doesn't shed ( but the cats more than make up for it!)

Hope you can get some ZzZZs.

My dog Lucy is going to be 12 and my vet wanted me to take her to a specialist and possibly have surgery on her cataracts. It was going to cost a fortune just to have tests and see the doctor. Lucy has had epilepsy since she was one year and takes phenobarbitol. I just made the decision that she will live out her years as happy as I can make her. She is not in pain.

Lucy is queen of the house.

Take care,
Connie

You are such a good mommy to your Sheba. She is lucky to have you care for her! And I agree with wystful1 that the cost might not be the cure!

Hope you are having a good day! Mine is so so but getting better!

poor puppy. at least you've got a system worked out! It's hard to have them get older. maybe you can feel a little better about your doctors decision, though, if National Geographic couldn't even fix it...

Your little Sheba is quite a treasure and I'm sure you made the right decision for her. And it sounds like you two are "in sync" with one another... and that helps! It is always nice to know that options are out there for us though!
